Stewart Wall: Professional Photographer and Photography and Photobook Educator

Hi, thanks for dropping into my website, where I display some of my work and talk about my photography and photobook teaching. I have been a professional photographer since I first started work in 1978 as a press photographer on the Brentwood Gazette newspaper.

When I started I was still registered as a schoolboy, and had intended to do a degree at the local college. 37 years later in 2015 I returned to academia and completed a degree in Photography and then an MA in Visual Communication. During that time I was asked to start teaching and went on to do a one year level 7 PGCE (the highest level) qualification in teaching lifelong learning. I still do some paid photography, but now I prefer teaching photography and sharing some of the skills that I picked up with others during workshops, courses, and mentoring. I think this is because when I see someone enjoying making photography as much as I do, and if I have played some part in helping them get to where they are in photography I get a very warm and rewarding feeling about life.

I also work with the Royal Photographic Society as an assessor on the licentiate distinctions panel, and wrote the criteria and was the first chair of assessors on the photobook distinctions genre that was launched in 2021. I often run collaborative photobook projects which prove popular, some with the Royal Photographic Society. This is where a group of photographers all photograph the same thing on the same day, but in their own way. The book then becomes an interesting story about how people approach making photography of the same thing. The Park Hill book has proven the most popular, with copies being ordered by 100s of people from all over the world.

In 2021 The RPS awarded me the Fenton Medal for my contributions to the society and to photography, which was a great honour. Please have a look at my photography and photobook courses and get in touch if you would like to have a chat.

In 2015 I founded FutureHeritage Photobooks which you can read more about by clicking here
