The Talk
I begin this talk by describing my early career as a press photographer on both local and Fleet Street newspapers in the 1970s/80s, where I would often find myself working on the streets.
Then I move onto more recent years when I decided to became a ‘mature’ student studying and making social documentary street photography which looked at both the human and urban landscape, during which time I produced a number books using Urban Street Photography as a form of research. I’ve completed two course so far, a BA and an MA and I am about to start a PhD.
To finish, normally after a break for coffee and cake, in the second part of the talk I look at how to go about shooting in the street, which includes:
- how to feel safe, and be safe on the streets whilst creating urban street photographs
- best equipment to use
- best technique
- the implications of shooting candid to posed street photographs
- the law concerning street photography
- the genius loci of the masters of urban street photography
- how to find your ‘genius loci’

Kind words of feedback
“Just to say thank you for the great day I had on our club Walkabout day with yourself in Grimsby. I found your introduction in the morning most interesting and encouraging to get out there and have a go”…. Janina
“I would just like say what a really enjoyable day you put on for us all” Mike
“I found your pre-talk highly informative and feedback given to the other participants was very constructive.
I think the amount of time given for shooting was about right and given the weather, we were incredibly lucky.
Group sizes were spot on as we were all able to take a variety of shots, with each member of each group having similar shots but often with a different interpretation” Jo
