Hi Ray,
That is a very good question, and you are absolutely right – there is no technical reason why the front cover has to be a Master Page. You could simply place the image and text directly onto page 1.
The reason I created a Front Cover Master is that I find Master Pages help create consistency across a series of publications, as well as speeding up the design process. I tend to think of them as a set of building blocks – Front Cover, Section Openers, Full Page Images, Two Images and so on.
Although the Front Cover Master may only be used once in an individual publication, having it there means that the basic structure and design are already set up. When I start another photobook or zine, I can use the same framework and simply change the images and text.
So your suggestion is perfectly valid and may actually be simpler for a one-off publication. My approach is really about developing a consistent and reusable workflow, particularly when creating a series of publications.
There is rarely only one way of doing something in Affinity, and part of the course is about finding the workflow that works best for you.
Regards
Stewart
