Photography has been a large part of my life since my school days. I feel very lucky in that my school did O’level photography which was where I learnt the art of film photography and printing, as well as studio lighting and portraiture, as well as social documentary photography, although that was not a term I was aware of at the time. Phil Smith was a great tutor.

Luck played a part again, when whilst I was still at school studying for A levels my Mum saw a job advert for a trainee photographer on the Brentwood Gazette advertised for a trainee photographer and they offered me the job because I was the only applicant with at least five O Levels. The day I started it was the Easter Holidays in 1978, and at first I saw it as just a holiday job, but I loved it so left school to join the team of 11 other press photographers, some of whom are in the photograph below when we met for a reunion about 20 years ago

Since 1978 I have earnt a living in many different fields of photography, for example commercial photography, sports, weddings and portraits, but always at the core of my work there is an interest in telling documentary stories of people.

In the last decade I have become more involved with the Royal Photographic Society and run one of the regions for them as well as being a distinctions assessors. I also completed a degree course and a masters in visual communication (photography) during which I reflected on my career, which helped me understand it more. In 2021 I was honoured by the RPS when they awarded me The Fenton Medal for my contribution to the society and to photography. I was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2022.

I teach Photography and Photobook skills in college and on a one2one basis, and run workshops and give lectures to camera clubs and other groups both in person and currently online all over world. I make new documentary photography every week, and will for as long as I can.
