I was lucky that my school did O’level photography which was a great subject, and then I was even luckier when the Brentwood Gazette advertised for a trainee photographer just as I was starting to do A levels and offered the job to me, I loved it and left school at the end of the Easter Holidays in 1978 to join all the other photograpehrs who were working there, some of whom are in the photograph below when we met for a reunion about 20 years ago

Since 1978 I have earnt a living in many different fields of photography, for example commercial photography, sports, weddings and portraits, but always at the core of my work there is an interest in telling documentary stories of people.

In the last decade I have become more involved with the Royal Photographic Society and run one of the regions for them as well as being a distinctions assessors. I also completed a degree course and a masters in visual communication (photography) during which I reflected on my career, which helped me understand it more. In 2021 I was honoured by the RPS when they awarded me The Fenton Medal for my contribution to the society and to photography. I was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2022.

I teach Photography and Photobook skills in college and on a one2one basis, and run workshops and give lectures to camera clubs and other groups both in person and currently online all over world. I make new documentary photography every week, and will for as long as I can.

The lead photograph of me holding the camera with the media badge was taken by my daughter Jessica whilst I was photographing the Nottingham Milk Race. She was 9 at the time and it is one of my favourite images of me. The portrait taken in front of the RPS building is also a favourite, and was taken by Peter Hayes FRPS
