Beyond Street Photography: Human Stories
Photographing People Today as FutureHeritage
Every person has a story — but there isn’t only one way to photograph it.
Beyond Street Photography: Human Stories is a practical photography workshop exploring how we can meet people, engage with them and use photography to tell something about their lives.
For many photographers, approaching someone they don’t know can feel daunting. During the workshop, Stewart will share practical ways to overcome that nervousness, start conversations and discover the stories that might otherwise pass us by.
We will then explore how different areas of photographic practice can help us tell those stories. A portrait might introduce someone. Documentary photography might reveal what they do. A wider view can place them within their environment, while a more creative approach might communicate something less literal.
Moving Beyond the Single Photograph
Rather than simply asking “What can I photograph?”, we’ll begin to ask:
“What am I trying to say — and how can photography help me say it?”

Inspired by photographic projects such as Humans of New York and the work of photographers including Daniel Meadows, we’ll explore how individual photographs, sequences and words can come together to create a short human story — and how that story might develop into a photo-essay, zine, photobook or longer photographic project.
Photography as FutureHeritage
The people, places, clothes, occupations and everyday routines we photograph today may seem completely ordinary.
But with the passing of time, the ordinary can become extraordinary.

What will the human stories we photograph today tell people about our lives in 25, 50 or 100 years?
During the workshop we’ll explore:
- Approaching and engaging with people
- Overcoming the nervousness of photographing strangers
- Discovering stories through conversation
- Using different areas of photographic practice
- Moving beyond the single photograph
- Combining photographs and words
- Editing and sequencing a short photographic story
- Developing your story into a photo-essay, zine or photobook
From Workshop to Zine

Following the workshop, selected photographs and stories from the day will be brought together into a collaborative Creative Camera zine — creating a small piece of FutureHeritage about Norwich and the people we meet.
Only 6 places — keeping the group small means everyone gets plenty of individual guidance and one-to-one time with Stewart.
