Create Project Photography and Photo-Essays for Photobooks like a Professional
An In-person or Zoom Talk by Stewart Wall

Photography becomes a whole new and exciting experience when you start to work on projects and/or photobooks, a journey which also helps to expand your creative skills. This engaging 90 minute  online talk (with a 15 minute break) offers an introduction to the core techniques essential for project photography and photobook creation. During the talk we will also look at a selection of the projects and photobooks the speaker, Stewart Wall has completed over the last decade, and some of his favourite photobooks created by others.

The Four Woodlands Project 2025

The talk will explore five key areas:

  1. Creating Photography for Photobooks
Discover advanced techniques for capturing diverse landscapes and subjects to create visually compelling images, tailored specifically for photobooks. Learn how to optimise exposure and composition for this specialised medium.
  2. Project and Photo-Essay Development
Learn how to conceptualise, structure, and organise photographs into cohesive projects and photo-essays, essential skills for creating meaningful narratives in your photobooks.
  3. The Power of Photo-Haiku
Uncover the magic of combining images with haiku poetry. This concise, mindful form of expression enhances project photography by adding layers of emotion and meaning, bridging the visual and written word for a poetic storytelling approach.
  4. Integration of Text and Images
Develop the confidence to pair photographs with text, enriching your photo-essays and enhancing the storytelling potential of your work.
  5. Collaborative Photobook Projects
Since 2015 Stewart has run collaborative photobook projects, which could be an ideal activity for your club.

Stewart began his professional career in 1978 as a press photographer with the Brentwood and Billericay Gazette whilst still enrolled at school studying for A levels. He went on to freelancing for Fleet Street before starting his own commercial and social photography studio. He has always worked in a reportage/documentary style and now focusses on street photography as future-heritage of our times. In 2015 Stewart returned to academia and completed a BA(hons) and a Masters in Photography, followed by a Level 7 PGCE in teaching. He is well known within the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), having authored the criteria for the RPS Photobook Distinction Genre and chaired these assessments during their formative years. Stewart also chaired Licentiate assessments and now teaches photography and photobooks both in the field and online. In 2021 the society awarded him the Fenton Medal and made him a Lifetime Honorary Member.
