Exploring the Emotional Landscape of Place and Time — From First Drift to Final Project

A Fully Mentored Four-Week Online Photography and Psychogeography Workshop with Stewart Wall

Begins October 5th 2025

A New Four-Week  — October 2025

Discover the emotional landscape of place and time through creative photography and psychogeography. Over four weeks, you’ll complete small, guided assignments, receive mentoring from Stewart Wall, and have the option to contribute to a collaborative online photobooks and zines. Perfect for photographers curious about memory, movement, and the hidden stories of streets and paths, and making creative photography with a deeper personal meaning.

See the world differently — one drift at a time

I’ve always believed that photography isn’t just about what you see — it’s about how you feel a place. Psychogeography helps us uncover the spirit, history, and hidden stories of our surroundings. Photo-Psychogeography opens up a whole new world of creative photography to us. Through drifting, mapping, and reflective photography, we’ll capture not just sights but stories — the quiet whispers beneath the surface.

This fully mentored four-week course blends creative photography with the art of psychogeography, encouraging you to explore the emotional terrain of both place and time. Perfect for anyone curious about memory, movement, and the poetry of streets and paths.

The Course starts on October 5th 2025

The Course Includes:

  1. 24/7 Access to the Online Course — Learn at your own pace, whenever it suits you.

  2. Full Mentoring Support — One-to-one Zoom meetings available with Stewart during the course.

  3. Online Course Basecamp — Ask questions and connect with Stewart and the other attendees thoughout the course

  4. Weekly  Catch-up Zoom Meetings on Sunday evenings between 6pm and 7.30pm— If you can’t make some of them it is not a problem. They are recorded.

What You’ll Learn & Create

Each week, a series of online lessons and mentoring support from Stewart will guide you to complete a series of small creative photography assignment — something you can do in a couple of hours — and designed to develop your personal way of seeing and making creative photography, and build towards a final, cohesive distinctive body of work.

Week 1 – Mapping the Emotions of Place and Time
Practical Theme: A Feeling of Home
Explore the rooms, corners, and objects that shape your daily life. Your task: create five images that express your personal sense of home.

Online Course: Introduction to Psychogeography & Place
Discover the core ideas of psychogeography — dérives (drifts), emotional mapping, and reading the city or landscape through feelings rather than landmarks. Begin your first dérive and learn to record your observations visually and with short written reflections.

Week 2 – Sequencing the Invisible
Practical Theme: A Feeling of the Street Outside
Step outside your door and capture the atmosphere of your street — its rhythms, patterns, and fleeting moods. Your task: create five images that reveal how you feel in this space.

Online Course: Developing Your Visual Language
Experiment with approaches to capture mood, atmosphere, and subtle human interactions with place. We’ll explore examples from photographers who work lyrically with space and begin shaping a set of images that speak to your own experience.

Week 3 – Unearthing Hidden Patterns
Practical Theme: A Feeling of My Home Town
Roam familiar streets with fresh eyes, noticing what often goes unseen. Your task: create five images that express your personal connection to your home town.

Online Course: Sequencing & Storytelling
Using your images from the first three weeks, we’ll focus on arranging them to create a journey — physical or emotional. Learn sequencing techniques that evoke narrative flow or layered sense of place, and explore pairing images with short text for deeper impact.

Week 4 – Assembling Your Psychogeographic Project
Practical Theme: A Feeling of Your Choice
Bring together everything you’ve learned to create a small, personal series on any location or theme that resonates with you. Your task: create five final images that reflect your psychogeographic journey.

Online Course: Presenting & Continuing the Journey
Explore ways to share your work — from online portfolios to collaborative zines. Learn how to carry forward this way of seeing so dérives and creative explorations can become a lasting part of your photographic practice.

Collaborative Photobook Option

At the end of each week, I’ll create an online collaborative photobook bringing together everyone’s five-image projects. Submitting your work is entirely optional, but if you choose to take part, you’ll see your images alongside those of other participants — giving you fresh perspectives, shared inspiration, and the opportunity to learn even more from each other’s interpretations.

Course Components

  • Weekly Zoom sessions introducing themes and reviewing work (recorded if you can’t join live)

  • Online course  (24/7 online course portal)

  • Full Mentoring support from me throughout the course (7 days a week)

  • Basecamp studio space — your digital hub for sharing, feedback, and discussion (proves very popular)

Why This Matters

Psychogeography doesn’t just change where you look — it changes how you see. By the end of our time together, you’ll not only have a small, evocative body of work rooted in place and time, but also a transformed relationship to your everyday surroundings.

Workshop Outcome:

By the end of this four-week workshop, you will have:

  • A cohesive mini-project of 20 curated images (5 per week) exploring the emotional landscape of place and time.

  • A deeper understanding of psychogeographic techniques and how to apply them to your photography.

  • Your work featured (if you choose) in an online collaborative photobook, showcasing all participants’ projects week by week.

  • A stronger, more personal way of seeing and interpreting the world around you — in both familiar and unfamiliar places.

  • The confidence to continue developing longer-term creative photography projects rooted in observation, feeling, and place.

★ What Previous Course Attendees Say ★

From Complete Beginner to Confident Creator

“Thank you for an excellent Photobook experience. I have been most impressed with the structure of the course, which made learning Affinity easy, even as a complete beginner. The short videos and clear, quick responses were brilliant. Seeing so many photobooks has opened my eyes to what’s possible — I’m now a proud convert!
Lynn Newton

A Game Changer for Creativity

“I think the course has been fantastic. Your guidance, support, and advice have been second to none and I would recommend it to anyone who thinks they would benefit from it. Being able to view others’ work, see the feedback, and give and receive comments is a game changer. Without that, there is limited external influence — otherwise we risk doing the same old thing again and again, losing direction and inspiration. I’ve come away full of new ideas.”
Martin Seamark

Motivating and Practical

“The bite-size videos are invaluable, especially being able to rewatch them when needed. I love the group experience, the willingness to help, and your depth of knowledge. It’s been motivating to see everyone’s books evolve.”
Tracey Cooper

Expert Guidance Every Step of the Way

“It’s given me the start I needed for my first photobook. The notes and videos are packed with useful info, and your quick, personal responses kept me moving forward. The other thing that shines through is your experience — I don’t think there has been anything that you can’t answer, improve, or provide an example of. Having access to your wealth of knowledge is a privilege.
John Meads

New Skills and Fresh Inspiration

“This is what I’ve enjoyed most: learning new skills such as Affinity Publisher, uploading my book, and sorting and sequencing my photos. Having a reason to write poetry, exploring other photobooks, and seeing the work of course members has been inspiring. The Psychogeography idea looks interesting, as does developing a book to submit for an ARPS.”
Pat Egan

From Dream to Reality

“I first caught Stewart’s presentation one evening in a My Photo Club session. I wasn’t sure what the class would lead to, but I was intrigued by making my own photobooks. I had always thought this was beyond my capabilities — I knew almost nothing about desktop publishing and doubted my skills to assemble a professional book.

Dr Wall skillfully guided us through the concepts of a photobook, constantly challenging us to create not just an album of images, but a coherent, meaningful project. The end result for me was a photobook I’m personally very proud of. I am already thinking of several future projects. Without the knowledge Stewart shared, this would have remained a dream. Now it’s a reality. I am in love with photobooks now.
Robert Flores

Pushing Boundaries and Creating New Work

“Stewart’s fully mentored four-week Photobook Course is an excellent, engaging and genuine workshop programme that has had far-reaching consequences for my image-making practice. The course materials are extremely well prepared, with a balance of lesson-based content, tutorial insights, and real-time feedback. Stewart fosters our creative capacity, supporting us to push boundaries, take risks, and create new work. Highly recommended!”
John Orr

Building Skills for Artistic Control

“I joined the course to learn Affinity or similar software so I could design layouts for printing my own books — I’m passionate about the whole process, from content selection to experimenting with textured papers and binding. Your explanations and patient teaching have been excellent, and the videos are so useful.

While I’m less drawn to Haiku or philosophical themes, the course has given me the confidence to persevere with Affinity and the skills to create books that truly reflect my own artistic vision.”
Josie Brough

Thinking Bigger About Photography

“I have enjoyed the learning process, which I know will continue for some time. I hadn’t realised until seeing your presentation that a photobook could be used for a distinction submission — that idea really captured my imagination.

The course has made me think more deeply about the purpose of my photographs — most of which sit unseen on hard drives — and how to present them meaningfully. I’ve learned a huge amount about thinking, planning, designing, preparing, and printing. I’m very glad I did the course — it has set my brain whirring with ideas for future books.
David Fearon

Outstanding Course Design and Teaching

“Your course materials are really excellent from both a photography and pedagogic perspective — and I say this as someone with 30 years’ experience as a former Government Inspector of education programmes!”
John Orr

The Most Immersive Photography Course I’ve Taken

“Stewart’s Photobook Course has been the most immersive photography course I have attended — and of extraordinary value. The breadth and depth of content has been extensive, with additional elements added as needed throughout.

With his huge expertise, Stewart has guided us to become competent with Affinity Publisher, but more importantly, to improve both our artisanal and artistic abilities in photobook creation. By the end of the course, creating an interesting, high-quality photobook feels completely achievable — a sentiment I’m sure is shared by all.”
Chris McIntosh

A Thorough and Enjoyable Journey from Concept to Print

“Four weeks of well-prepared video lessons took us from the initial story concept through to a print-ready photobook. Tuition in Affinity Publisher gave everyone the opportunity to prepare their own book for a commercial printer.

Weekly Zoom calls outlined each stage, with Basecamp as our lively discussion hub. Stewart also arranged extra Zoom conversations with photographers specialising in self-publishing — a valuable highlight.

Although the workload was at times intense, everyone kept their own pace, supported by Stewart’s professional and enthusiastic guidance. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable course that I’d recommend to anyone wanting to self-publish their own photobook.”
Peter Roworth FRPS

From First Book to Many More

“I have both enjoyed the course and found it very useful. I’ve achieved my aim of getting a book to a printer — and I’m sure it will be followed by many more, each of improving quality. I look forward to more interaction with the group. Thank you for all your hard work, challenge, and support in making such a high-quality course.”
John Rutherford

An Exceptional Teacher for All Levels

“Stewart Wall is an excellent teacher and communicator. His courses are comprehensive yet relaxed, helping students learn steadily and fully. Stewart gives full support and takes a great interest in everything we do, both inside and outside the course.

His courses cannot be excelled, and I highly recommend them to photographers at any stage of their journey — you will benefit and you will not regret it for a moment.”
Howard Fisher

Reinvigorated My Photography

“I was a little stuck with my photography and disillusioned with the usual photoclub style. I’d always been ‘sort of’ interested in photobooks, and this course has reinvigorated my photographic enthusiasm.

It linked me with others on a similar path and is perfect for anyone — even with only a basic understanding — who wants to produce a body of work for publication. Stewart is a great tutor and mentor who will encourage you to create something you’ll truly value.”
John Moore LRPS

Exactly the Motivation I Needed

“This photobook course gave me the motivation to take a more project-based approach to my photography. The content was thorough, and Stewart’s organisation and delivery were outstanding.

I looked forward to the weekly interactive Zoom sessions — enjoyable, full of invaluable feedback, and supported by clear step-by-step guidance on Affinity Publisher 2. Stewart was always available if issues came up.

I’m thrilled with the photobook I created and feel well-equipped to produce many more. I wholeheartedly recommend this course to anyone looking to take their photography to the next level.”
Graeme Reynolds

Informative, Practical, and Collaborative

“I found the course very interesting and extremely useful. The tutorial videos were thorough and really helped me compile the zine. I also valued the recommendations of other photographers’ videos — inspiring examples of what could be produced.

The use of Basecamp was an effective way to get us working together and discussing ideas.”
Jan Gray

Much More Than I Expected

“Stewart’s course was significantly more comprehensive than I expected. It introduced me to the importance of artistic intent, personal style, and narrative — concepts that those more familiar with the visual arts already understand, but were new to me.

The course gives clear examples of different genres, provides very attentive assistance, and offers a thorough overview of Affinity Publisher along with interaction with printers. A great learning experience and very good value.”
Alan Carr
