A chance to develop expert skills in creating photography projects and designing great photo-books

Stewart has been a professional photographer since 1978 when he started working for a local newspaper before freelancing for Fleet Street.
With nearly 50 years of experience in making and publishing photography, he brings a wealth of expertise to these workshops.

Stewart is an assessor for the Royal Photographic Society
and wrote the criteria for their photo-book genre.
He also teaches the Project Photography Course for them.

The Workshops are hosted by SYPC and are open to all photographers and photo-book creators

The three workshops follow on from each other : but also work individually

Day 1: 10am-4pm, Friday 22nd March 2024: The Photo-Haiku Workshop
Ideal for anyone interested in urban, landscape or street photography, and creating photobooks. The Photo-Haiku Workshop will take place at the Marina, Portishead, which is a stunning place to take photographs.

You will learn new ways of seeing and creating photography as Stewart shares the skills he learned as a local and Fleet Street press photographer in the 1980s.

During the workshop you will have your own copy of Stewart’s ‘Master Guide to Creating Project Photography’ so you can remind yourself of the tips afterwards. Also, after the workshop you will be invited, alongside the other attendees, to submit a set of images to be included in a collaborative photobook. The workshop includes a complimentary copy of the photobook, which provides a great opportunity to see what everyone else created on the day.

Day 2: 10am-4pm, Saturday 23rd March: Purely Affinity Publisher Workshop
Stewart designs and publishes between 40 and 50 photo-books per year, and in 2020 was invited by the Royal Photographic Society to write the criteria for their then new Distinctions Photo-book Genre.

If you are new to Affinity Publisher and would like to learn how to make photo-books like a professional, or use alternative and more affordable book printers to companies like Blurb, then this day is for you. Stewart will design a book from start to finish explaining in detail what he is doing along the way. You are welcome to bring your own laptops and work alongside Stewart using your own files. By the end of the day you will have a PDF ready to send off for printing. Stewart will also share with you the printers he recommends.

The workshop takes place at the Old Grammar School, Chipping Sodbury.

Day 3: 10am-4pm, Sunday 24th March: An Advanced Masterclass in Creating a Photobook like a Professional using Affinity Publisher.
During this masterclass, Stewart will use his professional press photographer skills to take a set of photographs in the style of a Creative Photo-Essay, prepare the images for publishing and then using advanced techniques, create a distinctive photobook using Affinity Publisher. You are welcome to bring along your own camera and laptop and work alongside Stewart to create your own distinctive Photobook.

NB: This advanced masterclass assumes you already have a working knowledge of Affinity Publisher, or you have attended Stewart’s ‘Purely Affinity Publisher’ workshop.

The workshop takes place at the Old Grammar School, Chipping Sodbury.
