A Great Day Out Enjoying Photography and Creating Photography Projects for Zines and Photobooks With Stewart Wall

Going Beyond Street Photography and The Single Image
This workshop teaches you how to find and create Projects for Zines and Photobooks
Wednesday March 11th 2026 10am – 4pm

The workshop focusses on three main areas to develop skills in creating Project Photography and Photobook Content
- Creating Photography for Zines and Photobooks: Participants will learn and apply advanced photography techniques tailored to engaging with street photography projects
- Project and Photo-Essay Development: Participants will develop skills in conceptualising and organising their photographs into cohesive projects and photo-essays.
- Integration of Text and Images: Participants will learn how to effectively combine text with their images to create more engaging and informative photo-essays, overcoming any fears related to writing and enhancing their storytelling capabilities.
The March 11th 2026 Workshop
takes place in the Digbeth Birmingham and The Custard Factory Area

Professional Photographer Stewart Wall last visited the area in 2022 when he led a group of photographers from the Royal Photographic Society Travel Group on a workshop in the same area.
He is looking forward to returning in March 2026 to see the changes.

During our March Workshop we will discover the Quietness of the urban landscape
and Stewart Will also show you how a press photographer engages with the locals

And then to the Custard Factory itself.
Stewart will discuss how Future Heritage is an important reason for creating Zines and Photobooks

By the end of the workshop you will be seeing stories and projects everywhere

Stewart Wall is the Founder of Photo-Psychogeography®
Photo-Psychogeography is a photographic method that shifts attention from subjects to experience,
encouraging us to see more by engaging with how a place affects us as we walk through it.
The Theme for the Day
Our Project theme for the day is ‘A Time of Change: Everyday Stories Urban Evolution. The Digbeth area of Birmingham is a place of constant evolution — where the rhythms of daily life meet the forces of economic and social change. This workshop invites you to capture the authentic moments, faces, and places that tell the story of a community in transition. From Victorian streets to modern infrastructure development, from familiar faces to fleeting encounters, your photographs will explore how the ordinary lives of a city and its people unfold amid extraordinary change.
Throughout the day we will experiment with creating photographic projects using different approaches eg documentary, visual/fine art, landscape so that attendees can gain a feel for what they prefer.
What You Will Learn
During the Day we explore four different photographic approaches to the same streets:
🧍♂️ Documentary Mode
Capture real moments and signs of social change with clarity and honesty.
🎨 Fine-Art Mode
Explore mood, metaphor, and creative vision in urban space.
🌳 Urban Landscape Mode
Use space, light, and composition to reflect wider cultural shifts.
🖋️ Photo-Poet:
Combining imagery with the concise poetry of photo-haiku to evoke mood and meaning in minimal form.
Each approach includes practical guidance, feedback, and an assignment to help build a meaningful body of work.
Collaborative Zine
After the event you will be invited to contribute work for a collaborate zine of the day, which will be shared with you online and be available to purchase normally for around £10 + postage.
Throughout the day there will be some amazing opportunities to make some superb photography and make new friends.
Places on the workshop are limited so please book early.
